At 14: 28 on May 12, Beijing time, a strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitudes hit Wenchuan County, in Sichuan Province of China, caused large area damages.

According to the National Seismic Network to determine - at 14:28 on May 12, a strong earthquake at 7.8-magnitude hit Wenchuan County, Sichuan (31 degrees north latitude, 103.4 degrees east longitude) which killed 9,219 so far in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Chongqing, Yunnan and also has caused serious losses of life and property.

After the earthquake occurred, The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) immediately allocated tents, quilts and other materials worth RMB 780,000 for relief operation of the local Red Cross from its Chengdu disaster preparedness centres and an assessment team has also been sent to the affected areas. At present the disaster areas urgently needs tents, blankets, emergency food, drinking water, medical supplies, drinking water and environmental disinfectant materials such as disinfectants.

According to the current needs in disaster areas, the Society appeales to all sectors of the community to take action in actively contributing, participate in disaster relief.

The RCSC has taken immediate action for relief operation at all levels and will be strictly in accordance with the "People's Republic of China Red Cross Society Law" relevant regulations, and in fund-raising activities carried out by the Society, will also be in accordance with the law,
